NFBC Newsletter February 2026

February 9th: NFBC Meeting

  • Pre-Meeting Help Hour- As usual, the club will be open from 6-7pm before the meeting. In an effort to be of service to all club members, some of our more senior members have been kind enough to offer their guidance the hour before the meeting starts. If you need help with anything bonsai related and have the time, join us and bring whatever material it is you are seeking help with.
  •

Meeting Activity: Club Styling Competition (and repotting/general tree work for those not competing)

For this month’s meeting we will be having our very important Club Styling Competition. For those who may not know, the annual Club Styling Competition is used to decide who will represent our district at the annual BSF Convention. The material this year will be Juniper (procumbens nana) and is provided by the club at no cost to participants. Because North Florida Bonsai Club is the only club in our district, the winner of this competition goes on to represent NFBC at BSF.

If you win at BSF, the reward is a $1000 scholarship to further your bonsai education.

The club provides the material you will be styling, and for this reason, we need an accurate head count of those planning to participate. The club also provides various sizes of wiring for those who do not have it, but you will need to bring your own tools if you plan to participate.

This is a great opportunity for all club members at all levels to gain more experience, and most importantly, have fun!

There will be a pre-selected panel of 3 judges who will be deciding the winner.

So, if you have not already declared, and plan to participate, please let me know by sending an email to me at [email protected]

directly, or send me a text (904)-463-6731.

For Those not Participating in the Styling Competition:

You are more than welcome to come and observe, or we encourage you to bring in any tree(s) you need to repot, and there will be help available to you. You will of course need to bring your own repotting supplies (soil will be available for purchase), but this is a great time to sneak in a quick repot or overdue maintenance work on any trees that are appropriate for doing that sort of work on at this time of year!

Membership Dues for 2026

  • If you have not already, please make sure to pay your membership dues for this year, this month. It is $36.00 and it’s not too late!

  • You can do so at this month’s meeting either by cash, check, or card. Checks should be made out to “North Florida Bonsai Club”.

  • We are required to turn in an Active Roster to BSF as soon as possible and being listed as an active member ensures you receive the benefits of being both a member of NFBC and BSF.

Soil still Available for Purchase!

    • Soil will be available for purchase at this month’s meeting for $20 a bag for club members and $25 for non-members. A single bag is roughly the equivalent of a 5 gallon bucket. We have approximately 25 bags available for purchase. If no requests are sent prior to the meeting there will be 10 bags at Monday night’s meeting to accommodate any last minute purchases. If you intend to purchase soil please email Kelly Harrison at [email protected], or text at (904)-463-6731, with how many bags you’d like to buy. This ensures we have what we need present Monday night to accommodate your soil needs. Payments can be made via cash, check or card. Get it while you still can, we are now below 25 bags remaining!

Seasonal Advice – February

Deciduous Trees –

As February unfolds, deciduous trees in Northeast Florida are still in dormancy, making it an ideal time for maintenance. Focus on structural pruning and refining branch work. This month, consider removing any weak or crossing branches and planning your spring development strategy based on the clarity of the bare branches.

  • Weather Connection: Daytime highs typically range from the mid-60s to low 70s, while nights can still drop into the 30s. Although your trees are dormant, be mindful of soil moisture. Water sparingly, ensuring the top inch of soil doesn’t dry out completely, as dehydration can harm root systems.
  •
  • Planning Ahead: Start preparing for repotting, which will become necessary as buds begin to swell, some may have already!. Collect your supplies—fresh soil, pots, and tools (if you made last month’s meeting you can recall some of the useful tools David Ruth highlighted)—so you’re ready when the time comes.

This is also a very popular time of year to collect deciduous trees (like bald cypress). If you have done so, just be sure to keep an eye toward the night time lows. If they dip below freezing (like last week), and you have freshly collected trees, don’t risk their recovery! Get them into a greenhouse or garage (or even inside if necessary) while those temperatures are freezing or even below 40 if you want to be extra careful. Collecting is a lot of work and one night of freezing temps can make it all for not!

Conifers and Broadleaf Evergreen Trees –

February is a month for active maintenance of conifers and broadleaf evergreens.

Now is a great time to wire branches into desired positions while the trees are still dormant. Be gentle to avoid damage to tender bark. For conifers, don’t do anything too drastic if you are planning to repot this year. It will soon be time to repot those conifers once we get into March and significant pruning will make these trees specifically more vulnerable to issues with recovering from root work. For your Broadleaf/Evergreens now is the time to be repotting (azaleas, european olives, boxwoods and etc.) as they are the least active and aren’t focused on creating new growth. They soon will be, but take advantage of this slow period to put them in pots that reflect your goals (up-potting for trunk growing and down-potting/root reduction for eventual potting into a bonsai pot).

  • Weather Connection: With fluctuating temperatures, ensure adequate protection against unexpected frosts for your broadleafs/evergreens. Conifers should handle our worst winter temps just fine (maybe consider special consideration for mame or extremely small trees in shallow pots that don’t have a lot of protection. Keep an eye on wind exposure, as it can dry out trees more quickly and water accordingly.
  •
  • Planning Ahead: Consider starting a light spray of fungicide toward the end of this month to prevent mold and mildew as humidity rises with the coming spring.

Tropical Trees – February remains a cautious time for tropical trees. They should still be sheltered from cold temperatures. As you all know, last week we got some brutally cold night time temps and accompanying wind. If you don’t have a greenhouse and you utilize the popular garage wintering method, look for days (like today) where we reach well into the 60’s-70’s and take a few minutes before work in the morning to get those guys outside. They need that fresh air and warm sunlight as much as they can this time of year and it also helps them with awareness of seasonal change. Another tip for garage wintering is misting periodically as they need that humidity they’re so accustomed to in their natural environments.

  • Planning Ahead: Acquire your various fertilizers now. It’s helpful to set reminders for when to begin fertilizing in March as growth starts; this will prepare your trees for the upcoming growing season. Especially if you’re using systemic fertilizers as it is very easy to forget when you last applied and when they are due for a refresh feeding.

Miscellaneous –February is an excellent time for the wild collection of deciduous species, specifically bald cypress, which are relatively widely available in our area and offer a unique opportunity to expand your bonsai collection.

  • Benefits:
    • Learning Experience: Collecting wild trees allows you to observe natural growth patterns and gain insights from experienced club members.
    •
    • Cost-Free Expansion: This method is a budget-friendly way to diversify your collection.
  • Safety and Precautions:
    • Permissions: Always secure permission from landowners and adhere to local regulations regarding wild collection.
    •
    • Responsible Practices: Use proper tools to ensure minimal damage to the environment. Take only what you can responsibly care for and try to leave the site undisturbed.

February can be a very active time in bonsai for many different reasons. Whether you are moving tropical trees back and forth to protect from the cold, or repotting the right trees at the right time, there is no shortage of things to do despite the cold temps outside. Plan as much as you can as there are some trees where your window for repotting is a mere days, and you don’t want to miss your chance. An additional year spent rootbound in a small pot can really set back your goals for that tree significantly, so avoid issues like that and you’ll grow the best trees you can!
