December 8th: NFBC Meeting

Pre-Meeting Help Hour- As usual, the club will be open from 6-7pm before the meeting. In an effort to be of service to all club members, some of our more senior members have been kind enough to offer their guidance the hour before the meeting starts. If you need help with anything bonsai related and have the time, join us and bring whatever material it is you are seeking help with.

Meeting Activity: Annual Holiday Potluck CelebrationThe December meeting has long served as our annual holiday party and this year we are continuing that tradition. This is a time for us to come together, reflect on the year and plan for the coming year while sharing a meal together. This is a potluck celebration so please bring a dish to share if you are able! It does not have to be prepared by you, purchased food is just as welcome as any other, or if you are like me, you can enlist the help of your significant other to make something for you to bring! Paper plates, napkins, and plastic cutlery is also needed so please feel free to bring those items if you’d prefer that to bringing food. I just ask that you email ([email protected]) me ahead of time so we don’t end up with 1000 napkins and 0 paper plates!

Soil will be Available for Purchase

Again, a tremendous thank you to everyone who was able to come out and lend a hand on soil mixing day, and a big thank you to Alex Stanford for hosting. It is because of your efforts that we were able to make so much and still have soil to offer to club members!  Soil will be available for purchase at this month’s meeting for $20 a bag for club members, $25 for non-members. A single bag is equivalent to about a 5 gallon bucket. We currently have 37 bags available for purchase. If no requests are sent prior to the meeting there will be 10 bags at Monday night’s meeting to accommodate any last minute purchases. If you intend to purchase soil please email Kelly Harrison at [email protected], or text at (904)-463-6731, with how many bags you’d like to buy so I can ensure we have what we need present Monday night. Payments can be made via cash, check or card.

12/13/25 Club Activity/Tree Buying Opportunity

You should have received an email last week related to an opportunity to purchase some relatively inexpensive pre-bonsai material. My good friend Matt, who works over at Earth Works Landscaping, is having to sell a significant chunk of his pre-bonsai tree collection. He is personally selling them, so the proceeds will go to him, and not Earth Works. However, because of the amount of trees he has, and for the sake of convenience, he has brought them over to Earth Works.

He extended an invite to anyone interested from NFBC to come by and check them out and see if there is anything they like. Based on the email responses it looks like the majority of those interested are wanting to go on Saturday December 13th. There will be 3 main species available: Portulacaria, Red Maple and Chinese Elm. All great species for Northeast Florida. There will be discounts available for bulk purchases and trees will range from as little as $5 to $40.

I did get some responses from people who are unable to make it on the 13th but you are more than welcome to check them out on Saturday the 6th, just ask for Matt with the bonsais should you visit anytime before the 13th. I will be present on the 13th and am happy to meet anyone else attending in the parking lot, details below!

Bonsai Beginner’s Study Group (Will Continue in December Pending Participants)

This is not a class or workshop. It is a group of individuals in a similar place in their bonsai journey studying the same material. There is no charge or membership fee. We will be studying from The Foundations of Bonsai by Harry Harrington and will cover the material over two meetings in a single month, but this group will be ongoing. We currently have about 5-6 copies of the The Foundations of Bonsai so please only commit if you are serious about attending both meetings and studying the book. We will need each copy returned at the last meeting of each month. Typically the second Saturday of each month will mark the beginning of a new study group and will be led by a facilitator. Because it is a study group and not a workshop or class, you do not need prior experience to facilitate this group. So, if you are interested in facilitating or participating please get with Kelly Harrison at the April meeting or send him an email at [email protected].

Intermediate Bonsai Study Group

December 17th (Wednesday) @ 6pm

This is not a class or workshop. It is a group of individuals in a similar place in their bonsai journey gathering to further their bonsai knowledge. There is no charge or membership fee. This group will meet once a month over a 3 month period before a new group begins, but you are welcome to drop by whenever you can. Josh Brown is hosting our current intermediate study group. If you are interested, the club has multiple copies of The Principles of Bonsai Design by David De Groot available to check out while you participate in the study group.

*Important*: Previously our Intermediate sessions have taken place at Florida Bonsai Nursery, but for the month of October we will have a new face hosting the Intermediate Study Group. Josh Brown will not only be facilitating, but also hosting at his house. Seasonal Advice – December

Deciduous Trees – December marks the true beginning of dormancy for basically all deciduous species in Northeast Florida. By now, most trees have fully dropped their leaves or are in the final stages of doing so, giving you the clearest view of branch structure all year. This is a good month to study your trees’ silhouettes, take notes for late-winter structural pruning, and evaluate any wiring that may need adjusting or removal before growth resumes in spring.

Our daytime highs have typically ranged from the upper 50s to upper 60s, with nights commonly falling into the 40s and occasionally dipping into the 30s during cold fronts. Your trees won’t need much water, so reduce frequency significantly—but don’t let them dry out completely. Keep an eye on soil moisture and avoid fertilizing this month. Deciduous species appreciate the chill, but be prepared to offer brief protection if temperatures drop near or below freezing to smaller trees in bonsai pots as they are less insulated from outside temps. This is also a great time to start identifying which trees you are planning to repot closer to the end of winter and getting prepared to do so.

Conifers and Broadleaf Evergreen Trees – Conifers and broadleaf evergreens are generally stable and comfortable during our mild Jacksonville winters, but growth is noticeably slowed. December is a good maintenance month: monitor for pests, remove old needles as needed, or begin applying some of those tips and techniques we learned from David Ruth at November’s meeting! Broadleaf evergreens like olives, boxwoods, yaupon, and podocarpus will remain active but slow, so adjust watering accordingly and be prepared to provide these trees with some protection (as needed) if temperatures do go below freezing.

With cooler daytime temperatures and cold nights, overwatering becomes the most common mistake. Make sure your soil drains well and stays on the slightly drier side between waterings. Be mindful of unexpected cold snaps; while most hardy species tolerate the mid-30s, tender evergreens or recently worked trees may need to be pulled into a protected area for the coldest nights.

Tropical Trees – December is one of the highest-risk months for tropical bonsai in Northeast Florida. Sustained warmth is no longer reliable, and nighttime lows frequently dip into the upper 30s–40s. Any forecast near 45°F or below means your tropicals—such as ficus, bougainvillea, jaboticaba, schefflera, and dwarf jade—should come indoors or into an enclosed, warmed space (ideally a greenhouse). Trees like Buttonwood or Brazilian Rain Trees are even more sensitive and arrangements should be made so that they do not experience sustained temperatures below 55°F for best results.

At this point in the year, tropicals should already have their winter housing established. If not, now is the time to commit to a plan: greenhouse, grow tent, garage with supplemental light, sunroom, or even a bright indoor window. Growth will be minimal, so reduce watering significantly and avoid fertilizing. Check regularly for scale, mealybugs, and whitefly, which thrive in warm indoor environments. Proper airflow and clean leaves help prevent these issues.

Miscellaneous –

December is a “stay ready” month for bonsai winter care in Jacksonville. Our winters are mild overall, but sharp temperature swings can arrive with little warning. Keep a close eye on the weather—especially for sudden freezes or back-to-back cold nights.

A few reminders for this month:

  • Have frost cloths, blankets, or covers ready for emergency protection (never allow covers to touch foliage directly during a freeze).
  • Avoid repotting—true repotting season begins much later, in late winter.
  • Trim watering schedules across all species; root zones stay cooler and wetter now.
  • Do not fertilize most trees, except perhaps very lightly with low-nitrogen formulas for evergreens if needed.
  • Check wiring weekly, as bark can become brittle in cold weather.
  • Keep benches clean and remove debris to discourage overwintering pests.Staying prepared, flexible, and attentive will help your trees sail smoothly through our fluctuating December weather and set the stage for healthy spring growth.
