NFBC Newsletter March 2025 Issue

Part 1 Club Update/Announcements

We will begin the club meeting with an update on club business and upcoming events. There will be more details on the newly introduce Bonsai Beginner’s Study Group and the soon to come Intermediate Bonsai Study Group. We will also have more details on the upcoming 2nd Annual Florida Bonsai Festival and the chance for volunteer sign ups and more information on the roles and opportunities available.

Part 2 BYOT Session

Part 2 is the BYOT (bring your own tree) portion. As you may know, last month the club took a field trip to Richard Turner’s nursery. We had a great turnout with about 20 club members. I know a lot of us came back with some fantastic pre-bonsai material so if you haven’t already begun working with these, now is as good a chance as any! While a Richard Turner nursery tree is encouraged, it can be any old tree you have that needs work. This is a great opportunity to tackle (seasonally appropriate of course) work you’ve been putting off or waiting for some guidance to begin. Whether it’s wiring, pruning or repotting, it’s all on the table…literally! It never hurts to have some extra eyes, or hands, on deck so don’t be afraid to ask the person next to you for some advice.

Bonsai Beginner’s Study Group

March 15th & 29th (Saturdays) 3pm

This is not a class or workshop. It is a group of individuals in a similar place in their bonsai journey studying the same material. There is no charge or membership fee. We will be studying from The Foundations of Bonsai by Harry Harrington and will cover the material over two meetings in a single month, but this group will be ongoing. We currently have about 5-6 copies of the The Foundations of Bonsai so please only commit if you are serious about attending both meetings and studying the book. We will need each copy returned at the last meeting of each month. Typically the second Saturday of each month will mark the beginning of a new study group and will be led by a facilitator. Because it is a study group and not a workshop or class, you do not need prior experience to facilitate this group, so if you are interested in facilitating or participating please get with Kelly Harrison at the March meeting or send him an email at [email protected].

Help Wanted!!!

When: April 12th-13th 9am-6pm

Where: Florida Bonsai Nursery & Supply

We are in need of your assistance! As you’ve probably heard by now, we are hosting an event on April 12th-13th and we are trying to make this the best bonsai event North Florida has ever seen! To do that, we need your help!

We are looking for volunteers to assist with putting on this event. Opportunities include, but are not limited to, event setup, event parking, event admission/greeting, food service and workshop support/assistance.

What’s in it for you besides an incomparable sense of accomplishment you ask? Glad you asked! All volunteers who commit to at least one full shift (3hrs) will receive a code for 50% off of any workshop or BYOT session. That’s a huge value for just 3 hours (or more if you choose) of your time! Just be sure to schedule your volunteer commitment around the workshop or workshops you plan to take!

If this is something you are interested in you can email Kelly Harrison directly by clicking here (clicking this link automatically sends an email to Kelly inquiring about volunteer opportunities), sending him an email at [email protected]calling/texting him at (904) 463-6731, or by talking to him in person at the March meeting.

We appreciate any and all help you can give!

Intermediate Bonsai Study Group

Apr 23, May 21 & Jun 18 @ 6pm

The Intermediate Bonsai Study Group is exactly that, a study group for bonsai enthusiasts and club members who aren’t beginners, but aren’t quite ready to declare themselves experts. Like the Beginner’s group, it is not a workshop or class taught by anyone, but a group of individuals seeking to further their knowledge of more in depth Bonsai practices. These meetings will take place once a month over a span of 3 months, at which point the source material will be fully covered. It will also be ongoing and a new group will begin every 3 months. The location of the meetings is to be determined, but there will be more information coming soon so keep an eye out! In the meantime, if you have any questions feel free to reach out to our NFBC club President, Alex Stanford.
